in connecticut. it released a statement that said in part, here we go. the association is made up of 4 million bombs and -- moms and dads, sons and daughters, saddened and heartbroken by the news of this horrific and senseless murders in newtown. the nra is prepared to make sure this never happens again. the statement comes as children of newtown return to class today and the community buried more shooting victims. fox 5s jennifer davis is joining us now from newtown, connecticut. so, i understand that security was set up in place to make some of those kidos and parents feel more secure. >> reporter: it was, will. you're absolutely right. they had security at all of the schools so that students would know that they were safe when they got there and they returned to all schools, except for sandy hook students. they're waiting for their new school to be ready. they're working on a middle school that has not been used, trying to re-create the premassacre and taking art work there and hanging it on the walls, taking the small desks there and hope in the coming days to have that middle school read
. >>> now the latest in the newtown, connecticut shooting. many students returned to class for the first time. also the commity continued the heartbreaking task of burying the young victims. jennifer davis is live in newtown tonight. how did this first day back to school go? >> reporter: you know, it was an interesting and painful day here yet again in newtown. what you notice is with all the traffic on these little tiny streets you saw hearses and school buses. you saw funeral processions and students. that gives you a good sense of the two directions they're being pulled in as their in the depth of the grief and saying good-bye to these young children, but also trying to help the surviving children get to a routine. they had two more funerals today. a little boy b james who loves math and recess. a little girl jessica who asked santa for a new pair of cowgirl boots this year. all the students in the area that didn't go to sandy hook went to school. they did a lot of talking about friday and they were together and that seems to have comforted a lot of them. >> i can only imagine the hea

. >> reporter: what happened in connecticut is something every school hopes not to confront and has to prepare for. >> in prince georges county and across the nation, you saw a paradigm shift in the way we handle active threat mitigations after columbine. our goal was to come and stabilize the situation. now, we understand that our roll error very to go in and mitigate that threat. >> reporter: prince georges county officers like most other police forces get additional training to deal with such a scenario. the school staff does, too. >> and they trained in active shooters and lockdown drills, other types of emergency situations that may a rise. the best thing is to have an honest, again, age-appropriate dialogue with your young person. and whether that is a six-year- old. you can't be as graphic or direct, but to remind them that administrators and teachers are there for their safety and if something happens, to follow the directions of the teacher and that we're concerned about your safety. >> reporter: schools are putting in extra patrols to let the community know they will do what they can

, we are still mourning the victims of the shooting in newtown, connecticut. what are your thoughts about this tragedy? >> you know, "time" magazine's calling it the massacre of innocence and that actually is a phrase from the first christmas, where herod killed baby boys under 2, at christmas time and, it is very tragic, that this is happening at christmas time. i think with the two sandies, sandy hook and sandy hurricane we really need the christmas spirit right now. the deeper the pain, the deeper the grief, the fewer the words. there are long term things we need to deal with to prevent it from happening again but now, we need to console those who are grieving. as a pastor i deal with grief every day of my life and i discovered it is a good thing, the way we make transitions in the losses of life. jesus said, blessed are those who mourn, they shall be comforted and if we stuff our grief, i figured out it comes outside ways later on in strange ways and so, part of the healing process is actually dealing with the grief, and, the way we help people in grief, it is to just be with th

students spent the day making paper snow flakes to be sent to the shooting victims in connecticut. -on henrehan is live. >> reporter: some of the snow flakes were being made by children so young their parents have shielded them from the details of the mass murder. but those families, too, wanted to send a message. on a cold and blustery saturday, dozens of local families mate a trip to the store called green genes. on this trip, they were not coming for the clothing and gently used shoes for sale but came to make paper snow flakes. these deck racials will be sent to the children who survived the massacre at sandy hook elementary. the sandy hook elementary survivors will resume at another school next year. >> we wanted to make that beautiful for them and take their mind off what happened and bright en their day. there is going to be a winter wonderland and hopefully they'll get that from people from around the world. >> reporter: the co-owners said that she and per partner wanted to do something. >> i got in touch with the pta and the church and found out this is what they wanted to do.
